For the medical billers, they are not required to have knowledge on the medical field, since their task is to compile the data into software for insurance claims.
  • For the medical billers, they may be required to interact with the insurance companies, to ensure that the patient has been properly compensated. They are also responsible for submitting all the documents of the patient to the insurance company, a task that medical coders do not undertake.
  • If a patient has any query about the billing they are referred to the medical billers, since they have information on the cost of the various medical treatments, while the medical coders are given a ready bill for the patient.

Similarities between medical billers and medical coders

There are some similarities between the two careers which include;

  • For the two personalities undertaking either of the careers, they work in the office and are most of the time referred to as the office staff.

If there has been confusion in the patients billing, the medical billers and medical coders will have the task to determine where the mistake is, and explaining that to the patient.

Advantages of medical coding and billing

If you wish to work as a medical coder or biller, you will have an added advantage over some of the hospital careers. This is because they are required in all hospitals, rest homes and other health related institutions. The other advantage will vary from where you are working from. For some countries, they are given a different insurance cover and health care.

If you wish to expend you career to medical coders or medical billers, you may have different certifications. It is important to first seek the necessary certification, to qualify you into the careers. You may opt to undertake the course in a way most favorable to you. There are online courses, certificates and degree courses that will land you the medical coding and billing job.
